Using your Gratitude is My Attitude Journal Part 2
The aim of this journal is to build a habit of gratitude so being grateful at all times becomes part of your character. As a Muslim, we have to focus on our character because the prophet s.a.w said “Nothing is heavier upon the scale of the believer on the Day of Resurrection than his good character” (Tirmidhi, sahih) And our habits are the building blocks of our character.
For example, when we say person A has a good character, what we really mean is that person A does good things on auto-pilot or out of habit; that he doesn’t need to think hard or think twice to do all those good deeds. When gratitude is part of our character, it becomes habitual for us to be grateful at all times. And that’s the aim of this journal- develop an attitude of gratitude. And the number one rule of building a habit is to make sure you don’t miss a day or skip pages.
We have designed this book in a way that makes practicing GRATITUDE easy and practical. In this 30-Day journal, you will have three tasks to complete daily which won’t take more than fifteen minutes of your time.
Let’s go over each of the three daily tasks and why they are important inshaAllah.
Firstly, you will start with a beautiful reminder to reflect and enrich your mind.
وَذَكِّرۡ فَإِنَّ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰ تَنفَعُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ
And remind, for indeed, the reminder benefits the believers.
Quran 51:55.
Sure we want you to build the attitude of gratitude and it is so much easier to ponder and journal when we are in a state of inspiration. Because inspiration is what gives you motivation to do the journaling part and pushes you into action of being grateful throughout the day inshaAllah. What is better than to be inspired by Qur’an and Hadith? We all need beautiful reminders to inspire us daily, don’t we?
Secondly, two prompts to journal about daily.
I am grateful for because____________
The challenge here is for you to be intentional and specific about what you are currently grateful for. There are many things to be grateful for: special people in your life, your favorite items and possessions, situations and conditions in life that you take for granted, unexpected and spontaneous things that happen and even small moments of joy like playing with your siblings or reading a book.
This prompt is based on a study by Martin Seligman that confirmed that the best way to express gratitude is to not only list what you’re grateful for, but also to take the time to explain the reasons behind it. To show how this prompt works, here is an example of what I journaled recently:
I am really grateful for a cup of chamomile tea my daughter made me last night because drinking it in five minutes of peace at the end of my busy day helped me to get through ‘bed-time’ noise without yelling or screaming.
The purpose is for you to constantly look at the world around you, acknowledge all that is good and come up with a unique item for every day you journal inshaAllah. At the end, you will have an ongoing list of all the people, things, places and ideas, situations/conditions that add value to your life. Any moment you need to inject some positivity into your life, open and review your answers inshaAllah. What am I looking forward to today or tomorrow ____ (today if you are journaling in the morning, tomorrow if you are journaling in the evening)
This is fairly easy, isn’t it? Always think of a ‘look forward factor’ in your day. This could be simple things like reading pages from your favorite book, spending time with your friend or working on an arts&crafts project. Use this journal whenever feels right to you. If you journal in the morning then write down one thing that you are looking forward to doing by the end of the day. If you journal in the evening then write about something you are excited about for tomorrow. Don’t overthink and if you can’t think of one then quickly plan for one inshaAllah. To show how this prompt works, here is an example of what I journaled recently:
I am really looking forward to going for a walk with a friend today!
Thirdly, you will have a wide range of fun activities to complete daily– riddles, brain teasers, crosswords, wordsearch, mindful colouring and drawing so you will finish off your daily journaling in a fun way inshaAllah.
That is a brief overview of the three daily tasks within this journal. As you can see, part two is the juice of the matter and we challenge you to write your response to both prompts daily. We have provided a half page of blank space for two daily journaling prompts, write as much or as little you would like in this section, BUT WRITE!!!
