Day 8: How to plan effectively and manage time as a homeschool mum?
- I have to cook
- I have to feed the baby
- I have to clean
- I have to bath the toddler
- I have to do the laundry
- I have to find time for my own ibadah
- And now I have to teach kids at home too!!! Where do I get time for that?
You see, many women I talk to mention that their biggest struggle is time management.
They often ask me:
Iroda, how can you work full time and manage schooling six children, as well as staying on top of cooking and cleaning and other household duties?
Well, my first answer is I don’t do it all by myself. Because none CAN. There is no superwoman in my house and we don’t have to be. Seek help and make a system in place where everyone in the family helps out. In our family, everyone has a job to do, including my husband, my mother in law and my children. And they all participate in running household day-to-day, so not all of it on my shoulders. Alhamdulillah
Secondly, I don’t stay on “top of it” at all. I have dropped my standards and learnt to become very flexible over the years. We don’t need to live in a sparkling, shiny clean house daily, do we? Some days we clean all day, other days we leave it messy. Alhamdulillah
We don’t get to have freshly-made, home-cooked dinner every night- most days we have a quick-fixed meal- grilled chicken in the air-fryer and boiled rice in the instant pot. And other days, we cook and eat the same meal for three days straight. And some other days we just stick to tuna sandwiches for dinner. Being flexible saves you a ton of nerves and also a lot of time. Alhamdulillah
Now, these are practical tips into how YOU can save time. But above all, I plan ahead. And that’s one thing that has helped me to stay on “top of things” a little, alhamdulillah.
Usually, I use Planner, Diary and a Journal to manage everything. Journal to offload my overwhelming thoughts and jot down monthly goals. Diary to note weekly appointments, and a planner to schedule learning time and even 1:1 time for each child. Yes, you read that right! I plan spending time with my pre-teen and teen because as they don’t depend on me for anything, my time can easily be consumed up by little ones. So I need to plan to do something with older children so to spend some quality time. And I plan self-care moments too. Because unless I plan, they aren’t happening.
I have always stressed to have everything in WRITING. Do you plan too much in your head? And not see things happening as you planned? Get out of head-planning and start to plan on paper with a pen. There is something about having things WRITTEN. It makes you more accountable, organized and motivated.
So, planner, diary and a journal are the essential tools to manage my time and to keep my sanity in place alhamdulillah. And that’s exactly why we have combined all three and produced an amazing toolkit for all Muslim homeschoolers- The Well-Planned Muslim Mum, an ultimate diary, a planner and a journal for your Islamic Homeschooling Journey InshaAllah.
