Day 7: Islamic Online Schools

Carrying on with Islamic Homeschool Curriculum options, today we will have a look at Islamic Online schools

I have not heard much about Islamic Online/Virtual Schools until recently. My hours of research led me to these Alhamdulillah!!! I couldn’t find much information about some of them, other than what was presented on the school’s website. While for others, I was able to obtain reviews from homeschooling parents I know of through various homeschooling networking groups. So you can read more about them directly on the website, speak to school staff virtually and register your child if what school offers fits your child’s needs inshaAllah.

Gateway Virtual Academy

is a fully accredited Islamic online school for grades 2 – 12, based in the USA. Gateway Virtual Academy is a private school accredited through Advanced, now known as COGNIA. They offer live lessons for lower grades 2-5, and self-paced guided-learning with teacher support for older learners.

Bayaan Academy

(based on reviews from families who have used) is also fully accredited (by Advanced) Islamic online school, based on the US national curriculum. They offer education for Middle Schoolers, grades 6-8 and High-Schoolers grades 9-12 in their virtual classrooms as well as short term courses. They have core subjects (including Arabic language and Islamic Studies) and electives (wide range to select from mashaAllah) and seem very flexible as you can choose what you want from their various education packages. They have Full-Time Schooling Option with 15 hours of live instruction weekly, Homeschool Curriculum Support where parents will be provided with materials and tools to teach their own at home, Live Arabic and Islamic Studies component only if you prefer to teach secular subjects using your own materials but need to outsource Arabic language and Islamic Studies online, and Full Homeschool Package. I have met some families in the Middle East and using Bayaan Academy for singular components and they have been very happy with the school so far. Have a look at their packages and see if it fits your child’s needs.

The Muslim Academy

is a complete K-12 online school, based on the US curriculum. They are currently in the process of acquiring accreditation through Advanced. Unlike the previous two online schools (suitable for grades 6 and above only), they seem to offer online schooling options for children of all ages. Currently, they are operating elementary, middle and high schools online. According to the website, they offer both live and pre-recorded lessons. I couldn’t find reviews online other than what was presented on their website.

American Islamic School

is approved by the Ontario Ministry of Education and is listed as a private Elementary school on the Ontario Ministry of Education website. As an Online School, AIS offers a Project-Based Learning curriculum (similar to Unit-Studies) that is connected to Islamic values. They offer an interactive Islamic Studies program and Quran via apps but no Arabic language. They have English, Maths, Science subjects based on US national curriculum. The children will receive daily activities with pre-recorded lessons and to complete these daily tasks (digital worksheets) require great parental involvement at home. There are no live lessons except for Quran/Islamic studies classes. Parents can arrange tutor support if need be. The children will receive a school report from the Ontario Ministry of Education and the transcripts can be used when you want to transfer your child to mainstream school or for future records etc.

Al Fajr Homeschool

while this isn’t accredited online school, they offer Islamic Homeschool Program where they teach six subjects Quran, Math, English, Science, Islamic Studies & Quran Meanings. They offer 10 live lessons weekly. According to the information on the website, they accept students from grade 1 to grade 6, live lessons will be conducted via Zoom. They use IXL for Maths and English (Free IXL membership is included in the monthly fee of $125) and NSES (National Science Education Standards) standard Science books (they will also provide you with a free PDF Science book). They don’t have specifications for Islamic Studies, they have stated on the website that they will use books by Darussalam publications. They also have Qur’an program, as a single component and other short term summer courses if you are looking to supplement only Qur’an.

Quran Reading

isn’t an accredited school either, although they state Online Islamic School, their main focus seems to be Qur’an only and they don’t offer any other regular school subjects. They offer courses in these four categories: Quran Reading, Qur’an Translation, Quran Memorization and Quran Recitation. While Quran Reading and Memorization can be suitable for all ages, Quran Translation and Recitation are suitable for older children and young adults only.
