Day 2: What is classical homeschool education?
Ok, today we will look at the following curriculums
Classical Education (Trivium)
In Classical homeschool, the goal of teaching children is to help them think for themselves using the “trivium” model. Children move through three main stages of learning: the grammar stage (memorizing concrete facts), the logic stage (critical thinking and reasoning), the rhetoric stage (learning abstract concepts, debating and persuasive skills).
It’s a language-enriched and literature-focused curriculum that has been adopted by many homeschooling families (particularly popular among Christian families). The main focus of Classical homeschool curriculums is the emphasis on Language Arts and also Latin language and then Mathematics and History/Geography.
These curriculums integrate character building into the curriculum by training the mind to analyze information and then draw conclusions.
To find more about Classical Education and what books to use in your Classical Homeschool Curriculum, I would highly recommend reading the book THE WELL TRAINED MIND by SUSAN WISE BAUER.
Classical Homeschool Curriculum Options:
- The Well Trained Mind Academy (flexible online courses)
- Full Language Lessons (levelled English curriculum, elementary level)
- Writing With Ease (levelled Writing curriculum, elementary level)
- Child’s History of the World (can be used as a History/Social Studies curriculum across elementary/primary level)
- Child’s Geography of the World ( can be used as a Geography curriculum for elementary/primary level)
- Classic Academic Press (all-rounded Classic Education curriculum for all subjects)
- Classical Conversations (suitable for homeschool co-ops and Christian based)
- Veritas Press (Classical Online program in virtual classrooms)
- Memoria Press (boxed curriculum, you will receive the textbooks/workbooks in a box and teach at home)
I have personally used many Well-Trained Mind products and books and try to incorporate books (History and Geography) as we try to develop critical thinking/reasoning skills within the lines of Islam. You will have to pick and choose the books insha’Allah (if you don’t opt for full classical home-education curriculum)
